Welcome to my world!

I'm Laura McGowan, a self-taught artist, learning and growing everyday. My art is created carefully with intent & ♥.

My start to painting was inspired by a sudden and complete loss of vision in 2013. After spending over three weeks in darkness, my perspective on life- details, colors, my own personal journey- changed. Being unable to focus on the objective world granted me an indescribable amount of time to dream and imagine. Despite permanent vision loss in one eye and damage to both, the experience made me realize that I want and need to create art. To be able to see, and use the imagination as a tool for expanding the way the world sees, is a beautiful thing. I am learning as I go and thankful for every minute of it.

I have yet to take an art class –each piece is a learning experience and a journey. I also continue to learn each day as an art teacher and direct support professional for developmentally disabled adults (at a non-profit called “Imagine! C.O.R.E/Labor Source” where I’ve worked since 2012). Having the privilege to share experiences with people of all abilities has opened my heart and expanded my creativity. These folks are my biggest inspiration, personally and artistically.

100% Laura-made!

All of my work is 100% handmade in my hometown of Boulder, CO and many are created live at events all over the country. The primary medium I use is acrylic but many of my paintings are multimedia. I often add sensory elements so that even if you can’t see the painting, you can experience it through touch. I aim to create art that is accessible for all.
